We created a comprehensive mobile app for Turismo do Alentejo, designed to enhance cultural tourism by providing users with multilingual audio-guides, interactive maps, and real-time notifications. This app allows tourists to explore the Alentejo region's rich history, legends, and landmarks more engagingly and conveniently. It includes features like customizable user profiles, a "Favorites" tab for saving points of interest, and a back office for the client to manage content. The app serves as a dynamic tool that brings the Alentejo region's cultural routes to life for a global audience.

Objective

To create a digital tool that enhances the exploration of the Alentejo and Ribatejo regions by providing users with an engaging, informative, and interactive experience through the integration of audio-guides, maps, and notifications.

Problem

The Alentejo region, occupying nearly one-third of Portugal's territory, is a treasure trove of cultural, historical, and natural beauty. It features stunning landscapes, archaeological sites, historical monuments, and rich gastronomic traditions. However, effectively communicating this vast cultural wealth to tourists, both local and international, posed a significant challenge. The region needed a modern and accessible way to showcase its heritage to a global audience.

Key challenges

  • Vast and Diverse Territory: Covering such a large area made it difficult for tourists to access and appreciate all that the region has to offer.
  • Cultural Complexity: The region's history is intricate, and conveying its stories and legends in a captivating way required thoughtful narration and curation.

Solution

To address these challenges, we developed a mobile app that acts as a cultural companion for tourists exploring the Alentejo and Ribatejo regions. The app is designed to guide users through four thematic routes:

  • Megalithism Route
  • Forts & Fortifications Route
  • Baroque Route
  • Avieira Culture Route

Cultural Audio Guides:
  • Narrations in four languages (Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French).
  • Detailed stories, legends, and historical facts about each point of interest.
  • Enhances user immersion by bringing historical sites and monuments to life.
Interactive Map:
  • A comprehensive map focusing on the Alentejo region.
  • Users can locate routes, points of interest, restaurants, hotels, and other attractions.
  • Filters allow users to customize their search according to their interests.
Notifications:
  • Real-time alerts when users are within 50 meters of a point of interest.
  • Ensures that users do not miss significant landmarks or historical sites.
  • Directs users to relevant descriptions and audio-guides for a more educational experience.
User Profile and Favorites:
  • Users can create and manage their profiles.
  • A "Favorites" tab allows users to save points of interest for future reference.
  • Enhances personalization and encourages users to explore more of the region.
Back Office Management:
  • A client-facing back office was developed to allow Turismo do Alentejo to manage and update app content easily.
  • This feature ensures that the app remains up-to-date with the latest information and offerings.

Process

Research and Discovery:

  • We began by understanding the region's cultural landscape and the client's goals.
  • Extensive research was conducted to identify the most significant cultural routes and points of interest.
